The Solid Rock {2016 Hymn Challenge}

For the month of March, Steven & I are memorizing “On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand.” In the middle of a generation steeped in self-sufficiency, these words bring a breath of fresh beauty, real truth, and deep, deep encouragement.

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly trust in Jesus’ Name.
On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness seems to hide His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood.
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my Hope and Stay.
On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh may I then in Him be found.
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.
On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

How often we try to find our hope in other places. We know better, but we do it over and over again anyway.

Let’s dwell on these words this week:

All other ground is sinking sand. His grace never changes.

Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above {2016 Hymn Challenge}

Wow, it’s already February! I finally sang through all six verses of my January hymn, Nearer My God to Thee, by memory last night. Barely beat the January clock… but it happened, and I’m sooo glad I memorized this hymn.

The prayer to be nearer to God’s heart is one that we can never ask too often, and Nearer My God to Thee was a really good hymn for me to sing over and over and over this month. January is gone, but I’m going to learn from these lyrics for a long time.

For February, I chose the lovely little five-verse hymn, Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above. The lyrics go like this:

Sing praise to God who reigns above, the God of all creation,
The God of power, the God of love, the God of our salvation.
With healing balm my soul is filled and every faithless murmur stilled:
To God all praise and glory.

What God’s almighty power hath made His gracious mercy keepeth,
By morning glow or evening shade His watchful eye ne’er sleepeth;
Within the kingdom of His might, Lo! all is just and all is right:
To God all praise and glory.

The Lord is never far away, but through all grief distressing,
An ever present help and stay, our peace and joy and blessing.
As with a mother’s tender hand, God gently leads the chosen band:
To God all praise and glory.

Thus, all my toilsome way along, I sing aloud Thy praises,
That earth may hear the grateful song my voice unwearied raises.
Be joyful in the Lord, my heart, both soul and body bear your part:
To God all praise and glory.

Let all who name Christ’s holy name give God all praise and glory;
Let all who own His power proclaim aloud the wondrous story!
Cast each false idol from its throne, for Christ is Lord, and Christ alone:
To God all praise and glory.

What good words, right? I chose this one because I need to be reminded to sing praises to God all the time. ALL THE TIME. All the time. In the very best moments of the day, on the days that aren’t great at all, in perfect order, and in perfect chaos, we should sing God’s praises. Joyfully, readily, deeply.

That’s my prayer for this month, and this hymn will help me to keep that prayer on my tongue.

So, hymn #2! Let’s do this! <3 #hymnchallenge2016

Nearer My God to Thee {2016 Hymns}

Near My God to Thee_Lacie Bowman Music

I’ve challenged myself to memorize one hymn a month in 2016. Anyone want to join me? (It doesn’t have to be the same hymns!) Tell me what hymns you’re memorizing.
The first hymn I’ve chosen to memorize this year is “Nearer My God to Thee.” Verse one provokes a lot of reflection:

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E’en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone.
Yet in my dreams I’d be nearer, my God to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

There let the way appear, steps unto Heav’n;
All that Thou sendest me, in mercy given;
Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I’ll raise;
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Or, if on joyful wing cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I’ll fly,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

There in my Father’s home, safe and at rest,
There in my Savior’s love, perfectly blest;
Age after age to be, nearer my God to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Is this the genuine prayer of hearts? Trial, hardship, difficulty. Whatever it be, Lord, draw my heart to yours.

My Music Goals for 2016

Lacie Bowman Music 2016.

2 0 1 6 //

new numbers, a new year, and new priorities

Aren’t goals fun? Last year I challenged myself to some very specific music goals and learned just how helpful it is to write goals down. Without a comprehensive list to look at throughout the year, I know I would’ve ended up loosing track of something.

So, I’m doing it again. :)

Last year’s goals went well, but as a mommy of a 20 month-old and an 8-month-old now, my  2 0 1 6  list is going to look a bit different. //cheeese// This year I’m going for a smaller number of deeper goals… like getting a good grip on Music History (middle ages to impressionism), creating a number of music products, and writing several vocal and instrumental arrangements in a variety of music genres.

Here’s what this year’s list looks like:

// Give Two Concerts – the first in June, the second in December.
// Write 8 new arrangements for violin, piano, voice or string ensemble.
// Add 5 new products to my store (that means more secret projects… yip, yip! ;)
// Learn or re-learn 1 new piece / month on violin or piano – 12 total.
// Maintain select pieces from my 2014 & 2015 Repertoire Challenges.
// Maintain all natural minor scales, arpeggios, inversions, and cadences on piano.
// Perform vocally at Remembering WWII. (September 24th… Join us!)
// Add 5 new vocal pieces to my 1940s wartime repertoire.
// Memorize lyrics from 12 hymns.
// Study Music History in greater depth (composers, periods, instrumental development).
// Add 12 new resources to my music library.

What are some of your goals for 2016?

Happy New Year, friends – have fun & work hard! <3

Happy New Year! {2016}

What a year! What a great, great year! I made sooo many new friends in 2015, published my first music book, performed a solo violin concert, practiced hours and hours and hours (and hours), and made some of the most wonderful memories of my life with my husband, my two babies, and my extended family. What a gift a year is.

At the beginning of the year, I challenged myself to a list of very specific music goals. Here are some of the highlights from the year:

PLUS, my first baby turned one at the end of April, and my second baby was born at the beginning of May. (Talk about a lot of love! I’m pretty sure we’ve broken their cheeks with all the kisses.) It was a fun year. I learned a lot about music, a lot about life, and whole ton about how they work together as a mom of two babies. ;)

I’ll be charting out my music goals for 2016 here in the next few days and sharing them on the blog next week. Suggestions?

Here’s to 2016! May it be another year of faithfulness, productivity, and service for Christ the King.

Music Giveaway {for KIDS}: Hymns for a Kid’s Heart (Book & CD!)

It’s August, you guys. AUGUST. That means summer is already rolling to a close and the new school year is about to kick off full speed.

This is the perfect time to have a little fun.

So… in celebration of summer and the new school year, I am giving away one of my favorite music resources of all times for little ones: Hymns for a Kid’s Heart

Hymns for a Kid’s Heart |  Wolgemuth & Tada

love this book. It’s is a perfect children’s church music history lesson and devotional all in one. Each chapter has a small bio for a hymn writer and sheet music for one of their hymns, with an accompanying devotional, scripture, and prayer… and it’s just precious. It’s beautifully illustrated and intentionally written so that even 2 and 3 year olds can understand the language and the lessons from each chapter.

The hymn sheet music is simplified so that young pianists can easily manage the arrangements. PLUS, there’s an accompanying CD with children’s choir singing the hymn from the book with orchestral background tracks.

Pretty much my description of a perfect book.

But what really makes this book special?

  • It’s pure.
  • It’s simple.
  • It points our little ones to Christ.

It’s a treasure to be sure.  And it’s out of print.

So, how do you win it? Rules for the giveaway below!
